MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga has packed this slim book with lots of ideas to make everyone from Michelangelo to Wassily Kandinsky accessible to immature people. This volume is a work of art in itself. Having borrowed the volume, I went right out and bought a copy for myself. What greater recommendation tin can there be?
I love this book! I won another book by this author (Bang-up American Artists for Kids: Hands-On Art Experiences in the Styles of Great American Masters) from the Goodreads First Reads giveaway plan. A wonderful introduction to art history for children with terrific hands on fine art projects. There are brief biographies of the artists, followed by projects that reverberate their style. I specially honey the Van Gogh starry night project, and the Duchamp "happy accident cord drib" project. The ideas in this book are for creative art projects, rather than craft projects in which everyone uses the verbal same materials to produce identical results. At that place is a glossary of art words, and an index of projects listed by the materials used to brand them, an index of art styles (such every bit abstract, cubist, renaissance, etc) and an index of projects listed by techniques so that you lot can look up all the projects that involve painting, etc., an alphabetize of great artist birthdays, and an index of the artists and the projects for that artist (some artists have multiple projects). I check out this book so often from the library I should purchase a copy for my ain shelves. Discovering Great Artists is a fun book for teachers or librarians who want to provide art history and art lessons for kids. I believe this book,as well as many other books from the children'south section,gives a great reference to teens and adults who want to learn more about the fine art masters and to learn the techniques showtime-paw. Kudos to MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga for creating their work of fine art in volume format!
I call up the just thing holding this dorsum from v stars is the illustrations are not in color. Having said that, I am thrilled with this volume. The art projects are all very doable for children, only are not dumbed down like a couple of other books I have encountered. In that location are many different styles represented like abstract, cubism, folk, modern, naturalism, realism, surrealism, cartoon and impressionism just to name a few.
This book highlights art history with relevant artists and techniques, and activities that imitate them. Simple things you tin do at abode, usually with materials you already take, simply that inspire exploration and engender familiarity with artists and styles. We've enjoyed using activities from this book for a homeschool group.
Fantastic volume. Well written. Well laid out. Was my main curriculum source last year when a teacher asked me to come in and teach about the great masters in fine art in her classroom. And so impressive was this volume, that the teacher went and bought herself her own copy. Very much recommend for educators particularly.
Returned to this volume every year since I bought it. The art exercises are great for the kids, and I do one every at present and then.
